Questions about Gibraltar tax
How is income tax calculated in Gibraltar?
Employees are assessed under two systems: the Allowance Based System (ABS: allowances, then 14%, 17% and 39% bands) and the Gross Income Based System (GIBS: bands on gross income with few deductions). The Income Tax Office applies whichever gives the lower tax. Source: gov.gi ITO, checked 1 Oct 2026.
What is the top rate of income tax in Gibraltar?
Under GIBS the highest band is 28% (incomes over £25,000 pay 28% on £40,001–£105,000, then 25% above that). Under ABS the top band is 39%, but most higher earners pay less under GIBS.
Do I pay tax on a low income?
Assessable income of £11,450 or less is exempt from income tax. A Low Income Earners Allowance applies up to £19,500.
How much Social Insurance do employees pay?
10% of gross pay, with a minimum of £745.29 and a maximum of £2,121.21 a year (£62.11–£176.76 a month), using the rates from 1 July 2025. Latest published allowances (2025/26). 2026/27 figures not yet published.
Which tax year do these rates cover?
2026/27 (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027). Latest published allowances (2025/26). 2026/27 figures not yet published.
Can I reduce my tax with pension or mortgage payments?
Yes. Under GIBS you can deduct up to £1,500 each a year for approved pension contributions and mortgage interest. Under ABS the limits are higher. The calculator applies both.
I live in Spain and work in Gibraltar. Is this accurate for me?
It shows Gibraltar tax and SI deducted through payroll only. Spanish residents may also have obligations in Spain. See our guide Live in Spain, work in Gibraltar and take professional advice.
What about Category 2 or HEPSS status?
These special regimes cap the income that is taxed and are not calculated here. See the ITO page.
Is the result exact?
No. It is an estimate for a single employee on PAYE; your payslip is set by the Income Tax Office.
Can I claim allowances for my husband, wife or children?
Yes, under the Allowance Based System: £3,455 for a spouse or civil partner, £1,190 child allowance (given once, for the first qualifying child), £5,800 if you're a single parent, and up to £5,480 per child for private nursery fees in Gibraltar. These don't apply under the Gross Income Based System. The calculator compares both and uses whichever gives the lower tax. Source: Income Tax (Allowances, Deductions and Exemptions) Rules 1992, rr. 7, 8, 12, 14A; checked 2 Oct 2026.
Is the child allowance paid for each child?
No. The £1,190 child allowance is given for the first qualifying child. Nursery fees relief is per child, and a separate £1,375 allowance exists for each child aged 16+ studying abroad (not included in this calculator).
Does health insurance reduce my tax?
Yes. Premiums for an approved policy covering you, your partner or your children are deductible up to £5,395 under ABS, or £3,000 under GIBS.
I've bought a home in Gibraltar. What can I claim?
A home purchase allowance of up to £13,000 under ABS (you can spread it over several years) or £7,500 under GIBS, plus mortgage interest relief. You must live in the home as your main residence.
What isn't included?
Allowances for people aged 60 or over, disabled dependants, blind persons, dependent relatives, children studying abroad, taper reliefs and the £4,000 special home purchase deduction. Your actual allowances are set by the Income Tax Office.
